How extra loan payments work

A fixed-rate installment loan usually charges interest on the outstanding balance. When a lender applies an extra payment to principal, the balance used for future interest calculations may fall sooner. That can reduce both the number of payments and the total interest paid.

This estimate applies the one-time extra payment before the first simulated month. It then adds monthly interest and applies the regular payment plus any extra monthly payment. The final payment is reduced to the amount needed to clear the remaining balance.

What this estimate does not include

The calculation does not include lender fees, prepayment penalties, variable interest rates, insurance, taxes, payment processing rules, or mortgage-specific terms. Actual lender calculations may also round interest or payments differently.

Review your loan agreement and confirm payment instructions with your lender before sending extra money. This tool provides informational estimates, not financial, tax, or legal advice.
